Clive

New Zealand hotels

Clive is a town of about 1300 people in the North Island’s Hawke’s Bay, between Napier and Hastings. It’s on the banks of the Clive River, and near the mouth of the Ngaruroro River. Recreation in Clive centres around the river. Tourists can row, kayak and jet-ski, or go down to the river mouth and try kite-surfing. The rivers also provide many beautiful walks and picnic spots.

The Clive River is home to the Nga Tukemata o Kahungunu Waka, an eighteen metre long traditional Maori canoe which provides visitors with a  rare chance to help paddle such a beast.

The coastal trail to Cape Kidnappers and its famous gannet colony starts at Clive. This is one of the few gannet colonies anywhere in the world that’s on the mainland and so easily accessible. The sanctuary is open from November to May.

The Hawke’s Bay region is also home to several award-winning wineries.
