Explore a spectacular sight a thousand years in the making. A short drive (30 kms) out of Rotorua, Waio-tapu or “Sacred Waters” is a geothermal wonderland of stunning activity waiting to be discovered. It has the reputation of being New Zealand's most colourful and diverse geothermal attraction. The pools range in colour from turquoise blue to a rich green and gold to an almost olive/yellow.
The attractions include the world famous Champagne Pool, huge volcanic pools and Lady Knox geyser that erupts at 10.15 am daily with a 20 metre high jet of water. The Champagne pool gets its name from the flow off effect of the carbon dioxide gas which causes the pool to bubble similar to a glass and the colour of bubbling champagne. It's only about 900 years old and it's around 65m in length. The temperature though is around 260 degree centigrade!
Waiotapu is also home to New Zealand's largest bubbling mud pool and the ominously named Devil's Bath which is a deep green colour and the more crowd pleasing Artists Palette, a large flat area that is brightly coloured with oranges, greens and yellows. It also contains the Primrose Terrace, New Zealand's largest sinter shelf.
In all there are 25 named areas, so getting around them all could take some time. Therefore it is recommended that you wear suitable covered footwear and stand well back. Especially from the mud pools which have been known to spurt out mud a decent way.
Combine this with sulphur mounds and impressive waterfalls and the natural bush setting and you'll find that Wai-O-Tapu is an excellent half-day trip and a must see for anyone visiting Rotorua.
