Lake Waikaremoana Track

New Zealand hotels

You'll find excellent views of the lake and and pass through several types of forest in this 43 kilometre adventure.

The most strenuous part of the trip is first up as you ascend 1180 metres up to the Panekiri Bluff but the amazing view over the lake makes the climb worthwhile. Water on this section of track is limited, and you should carry ample supplies. As you descend down you;ll pass through beech, podocarp and kamahi forest as you get closer to the lake. The track then heads up a stream crossing grassy flats and heading through kanuka forest on the lake shore. Take the turn off to the Korokoro falls which are just before the suspension bridge. It's only a half an hour diversion and well worth it.

The weather at Lake Waikaremoana is changeable and can be cold, wet and snowing, even in summer. So it's a good idea to call in to the visitor centre for information on weather and track conditions and fill out your itinerary in the hut books as you go. The department of conservation recommends that you carry a sleeping bag, a portable cooking stove and some cooking utensils. You'll probably need some high energy food with some extra for emergencies and a waterproof raincoat with over-trousers and warm (wool or fleece) clothing.

The wildlife is as varied as the scenery. It will range from possum and deer to wood penguin and parakeet to falcons and at night the North Island brown kiwi. Gray, mallard and paradise ducks are common on the lake edge.If you're lucky you might see a rare native bat. Deer, pigs and possums are considered pests in this region and the hunting of them is encouraged.
